Why salt water kills wheels so quickly
Corrosion is an electrochemical process. It needs metal, oxygen, and an electrolyte, and salt water is a far better electrolyte than fresh water. Ask any coastal ramp regular what actually strands boat trailers and the answer is usually wheel bearings, not wheels. The mechanism is simple physics: after a highway run, the hub is hot and the air inside it has expanded. Back the trailer down the ramp and that hot hub hits cold water, the trapped air contracts sharply, and the resulting vacuum pulls water past the seal — straight into the grease.
Two habits prevent most of it:
- Let the hubs cool before immersion. Five to ten minutes between arriving at the ramp and backing in makes a real difference. Rig the boat, do your pre-launch checks, then launch.
- Use pressurized bearing protectors. Spring-loaded caps (Bearing Buddy and equivalents) keep the hub cavity under slight positive pressure so water cannot be drawn in. Keep them filled to the manufacturer's mark — overfilling can push grease past the rear seal and onto the brakes.

Do this every time the trailer comes out of salt water, ideally before the salt dries.
- Rinse each wheel with fresh water, front and back. Aim the stream at the spots that trap brine: the back side of the wheel, the lug holes and lug nuts, the valve stem base, and where the wheel meets the hub.
- Rinse the hub, springs, and brake hardware too — the wheel is only as safe as what it bolts to.
- Dry the wheel faces, or at least let them drain before parking. Standing water in the barrel prolongs the attack.
- Inspect the finish, starting at the lug seats and hub face where dissimilar metals meet. Touch up chips and scratches on coated wheels promptly; on galvanized wheels, look for spots where the zinc has worn through to bare steel.

A freshwater-only trailer still benefits from a rinse — ramps are muddy and brake dust is corrosive — but the urgency is lower. In salt service the rinse is not optional, inspection intervals shrink, and bearings need attention more often. Treat brackish water the same as salt water: the salt concentration is lower, but the corrosion mechanism is identical.
