Trailer wheel lug nuts should be tightened with a torque wrench, in a star (crisscross) pattern, to the specification for your stud size — never by feel. After any wheel is mounted or remounted, re-check the torque at 10 miles, again at 25 miles, and again at 50 miles. That is the interval axle manufacturers such as Dexter, Load Trail, and Sure-Trac all specify, and skipping it is a leading cause of wheel separation.
Torque Values by Stud Size
Torque depends on the stud diameter, not on the trailer brand. These are the ranges published by major trailer axle manufacturers. Your trailer's certification label or owner's manual always takes precedence — use this chart only when you cannot find that documentation, and note that aluminum wheels sometimes carry their own specification from the wheel maker.

Work up to the final value in stages, following the same star sequence each pass. Bringing one nut straight to full torque pulls the wheel crooked on the hub.
Why a Torque Wrench, Not a Guess
A lug nut does its job by stretching the wheel stud slightly as it tightens. That controlled stretch is what clamps the wheel to the hub — the nut is just the mechanism that produces it. "Tight" by feel tells you almost nothing about how much clamping force you created. A long four-way wrench, a breaker bar, or an impact gun can land far above or far below the intended force, and both directions cause failures that show up miles later.
A basic click-style torque wrench solves this. If you use an impact gun at all, use it only to run nuts down lightly — final tightening should always be done with the torque wrench.
The Star Pattern, and Why Cone Nuts Must Seat Squarely
Tightening in a circle, one neighbor after another, can pull the wheel down unevenly and leave it cocked on the hub. Instead, work in a star pattern: tighten one nut, then jump across the wheel to the nut most nearly opposite it, and keep crossing until you have gone around. The star pattern draws the wheel flat against the hub face.
Most trailer wheels use cone-seat (tapered) lug nuts, and the taper has a job: as the nut tightens, the cone centers the wheel on the studs. The tapered end must face the wheel and settle squarely into the chamfered seat. Start every nut by hand for several turns before any tool touches it — if a nut gets hard to turn almost immediately, it is likely cross-threaded, and forcing it will ruin the stud. A cone nut installed backwards, or a flat-style nut used on a cone-seat wheel, will read "tight" on the wrench while barely holding the wheel.

The 10 / 25 / 50 Mile Re-Torque
This is the step most owners skip, and the one axle manufacturers emphasize most. Dexter's wheel torque bulletin, and equivalent documents from Load Trail and Sure-Trac, all specify checking wheel nut torque after the first 10 miles, 25 miles, and 50 miles of towing following any wheel installation.
The reason is seating. In the first miles of loaded driving, the mating surfaces between wheel, hub, and nuts settle into full contact — coatings compress, microscopic high spots flatten, and heat cycles work through the joint. As everything beds in, the stud's stretch relaxes and the nut loses clamping force, even though nothing was done wrong at installation. The rule applies to every mounting event, not just new wheels: a tire shop visit, a bearing repack, a roadside spare change, or a seasonal remount all restart the clock. After the 50-mile check, fold lug torque into your normal pre-trip inspection.

Under-torquing usually announces itself with noise — if you hear a repeating click or clunk that matches wheel speed, stop and check the lug nuts before anything else. Over-torquing is quieter and often hides until a stud breaks.

Do I need to re-torque every time a wheel comes off?
Yes. The seating process starts over whenever the wheel-to-hub joint is disturbed, so a tire rotation, bearing service, or roadside spare change all call for the same 10 / 25 / 50 mile re-check.
Can I install lug nuts with an impact wrench?
Use it only to run the nuts down lightly, if at all, and always start each nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading. The final pass should be done with a torque wrench in a star pattern — an impact gun's output varies too much to hit a specification reliably.
Should I put oil or anti-seize on the studs?
Generally no. Published torque specs assume clean, dry threads; lubricant lowers friction, so the same wrench reading produces a much higher clamping force and effectively over-torques the studs. Only lubricate if your trailer or axle manufacturer specifically instructs it.
