A bolt pattern is written as two numbers — the lug count and the bolt circle diameter — like 6x139.7. That means six lugs arranged on a 139.7 mm (5.5-inch) circle. On even-lug wheels you measure center to center across two opposing studs; on 5-lug wheels you measure from one stud's center to the far edge of the hole two positions over. The pattern has to match your hub exactly — there is no "close enough."

Every bolt pattern is the same two-part code: how many lugs, and how big the circle those lugs sit on. The first number is a simple count. The second is the bolt circle diameter — the diameter of the imaginary circle that runs through the center of every stud — given in millimeters, sometimes with the inch equivalent in parentheses.
