LT vs P: What Changes When You Load a Truck
The letter in front of a tire size tells you what the tire was built for. P stands for passenger — a tire tuned for ride comfort on cars and lighter SUVs. LT stands for Light Truck — a heavier casing designed to carry weight and take the stress of towing and hauling. The trade is simple: a P tire flexes more for a softer ride, while an LT tire runs a stiffer sidewall at higher pressure so it holds its shape under a load.
There is a specific rule most truck owners never hear about. When a P-metric tire is installed on a light truck, van, or SUV, the industry standard is to reduce its rated load by dividing by 1.10 — so the tire is only credited with about 91% of the load number on its sidewall. That derating exists because P tires were rated for passenger-car duty, not truck duty. An LT tire has no such reduction; it carries its full stamped rating. Load Range C, D, and E: Capacity and Pressure
On LT tires, the load range letter describes how strong the tire is and how much air it holds to reach its rated load. It maps to an old-style ply rating, and each step up allows a higher maximum cold inflation pressure — capacity and pressure always move together. Two cautions keep these numbers honest. First, the letter alone does not tell you the capacity in pounds — the exact maximum load and the cold pressure it requires are molded on the sidewall of your specific tire. Second, the pressures above are the maximums at which the tire reaches its full rated load, not the number you necessarily run every day. Your daily target is the pressure printed on the driver's door-jamb placard, which the automaker set for how your truck is used.
When You Must Step Up to Load Range E
Load Range E is the working standard for serious truck duty. Reach for it when any of these apply:
- Your door placard specifies LT tires. Many three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks (2500/3500, F-250/F-350) leave the factory on LT tires, commonly Load Range E. If the placard lists an LT size, replace with an LT tire of the same or higher load range — never step down to a P tire or a lower letter.
- You carry a slide-in truck camper. A camper puts a heavy, permanent load over the rear axle. This is a classic case where E-rated tires and the matching inflation are not optional.
- You tow a fifth-wheel, gooseneck, or heavy bumper-pull. Hitch and pin weight land on the rear tires, and that added load needs the higher capacity an E tire provides at pressure.
- You routinely haul near the payload limit. Landscaping loads, gravel, tools, or a full bed of cargo all push toward the tire's ceiling, where a P tire (already derated by 1.10) has little margin left.
The reverse is also true: if you drive a half-ton mostly for commuting and light errands, and it came from the factory on P-metric tires, a quality P tire that meets the placard spec is a legitimate choice. The point is to match the tire to the actual work, and to never fall below what your placard and axle ratings require.
Does an E-Rated Tire Ride Hard When the Bed Is Empty?
It can feel firmer, and the reason is physical: a Load Range E tire has a stiff 10-ply-rated casing and can hold up to 80 psi. Run empty at a high pressure meant for a full load, it rides harsh and tends to wear the center of the tread faster. The fix is not to guess at a lower number, and definitely not to inflate to the 80 psi sidewall maximum just because it is printed there.
Set the pressure your door-jamb placard lists — that figure already accounts for how the truck is normally driven, and it is usually well below the sidewall maximum. If you run genuinely light most of the time and want a softer ride, the correct way to adjust is with the tire maker's published load-and-inflation table for your actual load, not a hunch. Matching a Heavy LT Size
When you replace, matching the original size and load range matters more than the brand on the sidewall.
